About Ova (egg) Donation:

Oocyte donation presents many medical, ethical and legal issues. Counselling of both the donor and the recipient is therefore very important to resolve all possible problems (present and future).

Indications for oocyte donation:

  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Absence of ovaries
  • Advanced female age associated with ovulatory dysfunction, repeated In-Vitro Fertilization failure and repeated pregnancy loss.
  • Carriers of undesirable genetic traits
  • Exposure to auto immune diseases may kill eggs
  • Cancer treatment may harm remaining eggs

Patients attending our unit for assisted reproduction may consent to the donation of their superfluous oocytes.

What is the process of egg donation?

The process involves obtaining eggs from a healthy young donor, fertilizing the eggs with the recipient's husband's sperm, and then transferring the fertilized embryos into the recipient's uterus. For more information, please see the Becoming a donor and the FAQ page.

Some milestones achieved:

  • WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION accepted the "Tygerberg Strict Criteria" for the evaluation of sperm morphology (1986).
  • First ICSI conception and birth (12 October 1995) for South Africa.
  • Development of a computerised system able to evaluate sperm morphology according the "Tygerberg Strict Criteria" (1999).
  • First pregnancy after Laser treatment of the embryo (2006).
  • The unit uses endoscopic and laser procedures for infertility and gynaecological conditions.
